Abstract

The environmental information has been increasing rapidly and freely in recent years. This information is being stored in and manipulated by computers. Many of the data measuring status and change in the environmental management are being gathered by automated systems (such as satellites) and fed electronically into various networks. The need for information arises at all levels, from that of senior decision makers at the national and international levels to the grass-roots and individual levels. The ability to use these data to inform decisions about pollution prevention management and sustainable development depends on ability to locate and access, combine, compare and collate them, and on collaboration and communication between the data gathers and data users.
