Statistical Mechanics and the One-Dimensional Ising Model

Abstract

In this chapter we present and discuss necessary results in equilibrium statistical mechanics. After introducing Ising lattice models we illustrate the theory by treating a one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet and finish with an application of the latter to a biophysical system. There are many texts on statistical mechanics which develop the basic theory; a brief selection is Huang (1963), Ma (1985), Chandler (1987), and Thompson (1988).
