Abstract
The prevalence of HSV-1 infections is high in all areas of the world. With a slight decline from the 1950s where more than 90% of the general population over 30 years of age had serological evidence of infection with HSV-1, the has been a slight decline to around 60%–80% in recent decades in Western countries. This decline has been attributed to improved hygiene.
