Abstract

“Angiogenesis” has perhaps become as popular a word as “Michael Jordan”, “Mickey Mouse”, or “Titanic” over the last few years. A Medline reference search shows an exponential increase of the publications in the field of angiogenesis: in 1970, a search using “angiogenesis” as a key word identified only one paper published. Similar searches identified 38 publications in 1980, 198 in 1990, and 839 in 1997. This clearly indicates the recognition of the field of angiogenesis as one of the most important biomedical fields.
