Abstract

Gene therapy offers an interesting alternative for the treatment of various inherited and acquired diseases. Treatment of restenosis and induction of therapeutic angiogenesis in ischemic tissues are among the first candidates for clinical gene therapy trials, since only temporary expression of the transgene is required for a therapeutic effect (Ylä-Herttuala 1997). Several candidate treatment genes are currently available for these conditions (see below), and recent developments in gene transfer and vector technology have also improved our ability to achieve clinically significant levels of transgene expression in vivo.
