Abstract

This general term comprises several closely related dating methods, based on the radiometric disequilibrium within the radioactive decay series arising from the two uranium isotopes 238U and 235U. Synonymous are the terms decay series, disequilibrium or, to some extent, uranium-thorium methods of dating. The individual techniques are named after the daughter/parent nuclide pairs, as e.g. 230Th/234U, 231Pa/235U and 234U/238U. A comprehensive description of the various techniques and their applications is found in the collected edition by Ivanovich and Harmon (1992).
