Abstract
The renin-angiotensin system was first discovered by Tigerstedt and Bergman in 1898. These experiments, and the work of Goldblatt et al. in 1934, investigated the role of the renin-angiotensin system in blood pressure control. Since then many laboratories have described the biochemistry by which the protein angiotensinogen is converted into the eight amino acid peptide angiotensin II. The final step in this process, the conversion of the decapeptide precursor angiotensin I into angiotensin II, is catalyzed by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a dipeptidyl carboxypeptidase (Corvol et al. 1995).
