Abstract

Countercurrent chromatography (CCC) is a separation technique which relies on the partition of a sample between two immiscible solvents, the relative proportions of solute passing into each of the two phases being determined by the respective partition coefficients. It is an all-liquid method which is characterized by the absence of a solid support, and thus has the following advantages over other chromatographic techniques:

  • no irreversible adsorption of the sample (solutes are readily retained by a solid support; the adsorption effects are often manifested by elution curves which show tailing of the substances under consideration)

  • quantitative recovery of the introduced sample

  • risk of sample denaturation greatly reduced

  • ow solvent consumption

  • favourable economics.
