Abstract

Bacterial wilt (BW) of tomato, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, is the most important disease affecting tomato production in many tropical and subtropical regions (OpeƱa et al. 1990). Disease control for BW is difficult because the pathogen is soil-borne and has a wide host range covering plant 44 (Hayward, 1991). Planting resistant varieties is the most effective and simplest method for controlling the disease. Many BW resistance sources and resistant breeding lines have been identified or bred (Gilbert et al. 1974, Henderson and Jenkins, 1972, Prior et al. 1994). However, a major problem in using these resistant lines is their instability. The effect of location as well as the location x variety interaction have been shown to be highly significant in a multilocation evaluation conducted in Southeast Asia (Hanson et al. 1996).
