Abstract
Ralstonia solanacearum biovar 2A has increased in importance as a quarantine organism in Europe following sporadic reports of potato brown rot disease in Sweden (Olsson 1976) and more recently, since 1989, in other European countries including Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the UK (Stead et al. 1996). The pathogen is thought to have spread undetected in latently infected seed potatoes in the Netherlands during 1995 causing widespread disease outbreaks on more than 90 seed and ware potato farms.
