Abstract
The first two papers in this section discuss detection and diagnosis of Ralstonia solanacearum in potato tubers, weeds and irrigation water in the UK and Netherlands. Research in both laboratories shows that no single diagnostic test developed to date meets all the requirements of sensitivity, specificity, speed and cost. The most suitable detection test will be highly dependent on the facilities and staff resources of the laboratory performing the test. Despite this, most laboratories at present have settled for using rapid immunological tests (ELISA or IF) as the primary screen, followed by confirmation of positive results by culturing, host tests and/or PCR.
