Restriction of Dispersal Due to Anchorage Mechanisms

Abstract

Two main types of anchorage mechanisms have been described, namely myxospermy and trypanospermy. Although the mechanisms operating in these two phenomena differ vastly, the advantages conferred to the species by way of anchorage are similar. Myxospermic diaspores form a superficial layer of mucilage upon moistening, while trypanospermic diaspores have the ability to “drill” (bore) their diaspores into the soil.
