Abstract
Mediterranean-type ecosystems (MTEs) of the Mediterranean region have undergone significant land use changes over the last few decades. After having been extensively used for centuries for traditional human activities, such as agro-pastoralism, tree and woodcutting and hunting, which have led to the establishment of a man-maintained dynamic equilibrium, they now are facing clashing demands by modern developers and classical conservationists. Depopulation and abandonment are conflicting with intensification of agro-pastoral utilization, expansion of urban-industrial sprawl as well as mass recreation and tourism resulting in functional, structural and visual landscape degradation (Naveh and Lieberman 1994).
