Abstract

This chapter treats multielectron photoionization processes arising in collisions of atoms and ions with a single high-energy photon. Multiphoton multielectron ionization of an atomic system, e.g., by an intense laser radiation, is also possible but this process is not considered here. Multiple photoionization is a subject of special attention because it is extremely sensitive to the the details of atomic structure and the correlation effects between atomic electrons. The main attention is paid to the double-ionization processes and, especially, to the ratio of double to single photoionization cross sections in He atom and He-like systems. Double-electron processes of photoionization with simultaneous excitation of the target electrons are also considered.
