Abstract

Our purpose in this chapter is to review basic material about linear error correcting codes. The ones of most interest to us are over the fields of 2, 3 and 4 elements. These objects arise naturally when trying to describe structure and representations of almost simple groups. For further background on general coding theory, see [MacW-Sl].
