Abstract

The elementary processes photoionization, radiative recombination and Brems-strahlung will be treated as being responsible for the ionization-recombination balance and for the emission of characteristic short-wavelength radiation of highly charged ions in plasmas. We will also briefly summarize the development of x-ray lasers as monochromatic sources of VUV and x-ray radiation employing plasmas of highly charged ions as active media.
