Abstract

We assume the reader to be familiar with some basic concepts on numerical methods for partial differential equations in general. In particular, we shall assume the concepts of truncation error, order of accuracy, consistency, modified equation, stability and convergence. For background on these concepts the reader may consult virtually any standard book on numerical methods for differential equations. As general references, useful textbooks are those of Smith [288], Anderson et. al. [5], Mitchell and Griffiths [218], Roache [253], Richtmyer and Morton [250], Hoffmann [156] and Fletcher [112]. Very relevant textbooks to the main themes of this book are Sod [292], Holt [157], Hirsch Volumes I [154] and II [155], and LeVeque [188].
