Ionization by Bare Projectiles

Abstract

Electron spectra induced by bare heavy ions generally exhibit pronounced structures due to soft and binary collisions (Fig. 2.1). In addition, at observation angles near 0° , the spectra show the cusp shaped peak due to electron capture to the continuum. The ionization mechanisms for bare heavy projectiles are similar to those for proton impact. The proton impact data have been discussed in detail by Rudd et al. (1992). Therefore, in the following, the attention is focused on the characteristic features of bare heavy ions. Contrary to proton impact, highly charged ions give rise to significant two-center effects on the ejected electrons at nearly all emission angles.
