Abstract

The equilibrium response is a traditional domain of classical thermodynamics. Although we shall speak about the equilibrium response of viscous bodies with heat conduction, the results apply to a much wider class of bodies in equilibrium, such as viscoelastic bodies with memory. Two main topics to be discussed are the changes of variables and the second derivatives of the thermodynamic potentials, presented here for bodies of arbitrary symmetry. The specialization to isotropic bodies is carried out in the next chapter.
