Abstract
In this section, we will take a somewhat detailed look at the main processes responsible for the observed mean meridional circulation of the middle atmosphere. We will see that the dynamical behavior of the middle atmosphere differs in a crucial way from that of the troposphere. Moreover, the presence of ozone throughout much of the stratosphere determines to a very large degree the radiative drive and to a certain extent the temperature structure of the middle atmosphere.
