Abstract

This chapter focuses on two of the many available techniques for remotely probing the atmosphere: solar occultation and lidar. A brief description is given of the solar occultation measurement technique used in the Stratospheric Aerosols Measurement (SAM) satellite on the Nimbus 7 satellite and the Stratopheric Aerosol and Gas Experiments (SAGE I and SAGE II) on the Applications Explorer Mission 2 and Earth Radiation Budget satellites, respectively. The general principle of lidar and differential absorption lidar (DIAL) is discussed. A few exciting examples from a recent shuttle borne lidar (the Lidar In-space Technology Experiment) are also shown in this chapter.
