Hydrodynamic Solitons

Chapter

Abstract

The behavior of water waves can be observed in nature by each of us. For example, the wave that most people first encounter may be one which approaches a beach. Water waves can be appreciated in a descriptive way without any technical knowledge (The Open University course team 1989). This is a fascinating subject (Lamb 1932), because the phenomena are familiar and the mathematical problems are various (Witham 1974). The literature is vast and the more modern literature concentrates on nonlinear problems (Lighthill 1978; Crapper 1984).
