Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics and the Kinetics of Vitrification

Abstract

The preceding discussion in chapter 2 concerning the nature of the vitreous state has led to the conclusion that glasses are frozen-in non-equilibrium systems. Non-equilibrium systems cannot be described in the framework of classical thermodynamics, which is restricted in its scope to equilibrium states and quasistatic processes between them.
