Cryopreservation of Germplasm of Woody Plants

Cryopreservation of Plant Germplasm I

Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 32))

Abstract

The conservation of clones of rare, elite, and other important trees is of great importance in clonal propagation. The recent demonstration that embryogenic conifer cultures are amenable to cryopreservation indicates their obvious application for long-term storage of conifer tissues for clonal forestry programs (Gupta et al. 1987; Kartha et al. 1988; Klimaszewska et al. 1992). These in vitro practices will undoubtedly play an important role in large-scale production and improvement of fruit and forest trees, and eventually in achieving an increased production of biomass energy.
