Abstract

Electronic transitions in molecules lead to spectra which are extraordinarily rich in lines, because not only does the electronic state change during the transition, but so also do the vibrational and rotational states. The analysis of the resulting band spectra can be extremely tedious and complex. In Sects. 14.1 through 14.4, we discuss the most important concepts for the understanding and the analysis of these spectra. Section 14.6 again contains some remarks on the extension to larger molecules.
