The Inflationary Universe

Abstract

The spontaneous breakdown of a GUT symmetry in the early universe may lead to a phase-transition, and subsequently to a thermal history deviating quite strongly from the standard model. This concept of the so-called “inflationary universe” has gained wide publicity recently — one more reason why it should be discussed thoroughly here, despite its highly speculative nature [Gliner 1965; K. Sato 1981 a, b; Guth 1981; Albrecht and Steinhardt 1982; Linde 1982; Brandenberger 1985, for a review].
