Lipid Modifications of Proteins
A protein’s structure and function is determined by both its primary amino acid sequence and by covalent modifications of these amino acids. Among the very large number of such alterations, which can vary from simple inorganic substituents to complex arrays of oligosaccharides, are a group of lipids. The latter have been detected in many proteins that associate with cellular membranes and in a variety of virus structural polypeptides. Thus far, four distinct types of lipid modifications have been identified in eukaryotic cell and virus proteins (Fig. 1).
