Abstract

An attempt is made to interpret the symmetric spontaneous fission of the heavy actinides, e.g. of 258Fm, according to the general scheme developed by the authors [1] in the case of asymmetric fission. This attempt leads to observations suggesting that this kind of symmetric fission occurs for nuclei in which the initial formation of a cluster within the valence shells of the fissioning nucleus yields an energy higher than the threshold for formation of a pion. It is also suggested that this mode of fission could be related to a phase change of nuclear matter.
