Abstract

Much of the usefulness of He scattering to surface science stems from data analysis by simple kinematics: the two-dimensional diffraction pattern from an ordered surface directly gives the reciprocal lattice vectors G of the surface; the broadening of the diffraction peaks indicates the type and amount of disorder; dips or peaks in the intensity of a diffracted beam as a function of the incidence angles (θ i , ø i ), or of the incident energy E i , give the surface bound state energies, ε b; and sharp peaks in the time-of-flight (TOF) spectra directly give the dispersion curves ω j (Q) of the surface phonon branches. Nevertheless, for a full analysis of all these experiments a knowledge of the He—surface interaction is useful, and often essential.
