Abstract
DSM and ICD criteria for schizophrenia in adults have been applied across the whole age range with the finding that it is uncommon below the age of 13 years and rare before that of 7 years (Rutter 1984; Watkins et al. 1988). However the operational definitions of schizophrenia do not take into account possible developmentally related differences in cause, course, presentation and effects.
