Adoption Studies on Schizophrenia

Abstract

Family studies have shown a greater risk for schizophrenia in the close relatives of schizophrenics than is to be expected in the general population. Investigations of twins have revealed much higher concordance figures for monozygotic than for dizygotic twins with respect to schizophrenia. However, several twin studies also clearly show that the clinical picture of the nonschizophrenic monozygotic cotwin is variable, ranging from a duplication of the schizophrenic psychosis to neurosis, or even clinical normality (Kringlen 1987).
