Abstract
A number of authors, especially Eisenberg (1977), Kleinman (1988), and Fabrega (1974), have made a useful distinction between illness and disease, based on the difference of perspective between patient and physician. As Eisenberg (1977, p. 11) succinctly put it: “Patients suffer ‘illnesses’; physicians diagnose and treat ‘diseases’”.
