Because the anorectum can be easily examined digitally and endoscopically, it has long been believed that radiology has nothing to offer in its exploration. This opinion has been mostly maintained by the use of a single-contrast barium enema technique, known for its lack of sensitivity in the detection of many lesions. The advances in the technique of barium enema (double-contrast), the fast development of new imaging methods (ultrasonography, computerized tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance), and a better understanding of the physiology and physiopathology of the anorectum have contributed to making radiological investigations essential before any therapeutic procedure.
