Zusammenfassung
Makrophagen sind von mehreren Autoren mit der Entstehung von Arteriosklerose in Zusammenhang gebracht worden. Diskutiert wird u. a. ihre Beteiligung an der Schaumzellbildung (Schaffner et al., 1980), der Entstehung des nekrotischen Kerns von arteriosklerotischen Plaques (Stary, 1982), der Bindung von modifizierten LDL (Goldstein et al., 1979), sowie ihre Einflußnahme auf die Entwicklung der Arteriosklerose mittels Sekretion verschiedener biologisch aktiver Substanzen. Letzteres gilt insbesondere für die „response to injury“ Hypothese (Habe-nicht, 1988). Unklar ist jedoch, ob Makrophagen eine regressive oder progressive Wirkung auf die Entwicklung von Arteriosklerose haben.
