Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to review current trends and developments in freight transportation in North America. It begins with an overview of recent trends in freight traffic, and then turns to a discussion of underlying changes in the demand for freight transport and changes in the service, technology and operations of each of the major modes of freight transportation. Also discussed are major problems in each of the modes and possible solutions in each. Three major themes permeate the discussion: (1) regulatory reform, or reduced regulation, of rail, truck, air, and water transport, (2) major changes in the production and distribution of goods and shippers’ requirements for transportation services, and (3) the development of new transportation services and development of new technology, with particular emphasis on intermodal service.
