Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide some feeling for the impact of picosecond lasers on studies of chemical phenomena in liquids. Although there have been notable advances in the application of picosecond spectroscopy to chemical change in gases and to some extent solids, keeping this chapter to a reasonable length precludes a reasonable discussion of those research areas. For the same reason photophysical processes have not been not included. One might correctly observe that the need to restrict the topics that can be included in a single chapter testifies to the enormous success of ultrafast laser spectroscopy in diverse areas of chemistry. Why then select chemical change in liquids from among these many possibilities? Aside from the author’s inclinations, the treatment of “truly” chemical processes extends the scope of this book. Many of the physical relaxation processes are treated, to some extent at least, in the other chapters. Furthermore, most of what we generally recognize as chemistry does take place in solution, and provides a way for both experimentalist and theorist to probe the nature of the liquid state. So much for direction and motivation for this chapter, now for the commentary.
