Abstract
This chapter is a transitional one. The chapters that precede it describe in rather general terms a variety of transport processes that take place in living systems. Most of this material applies to a broad spectrum of cells and tissues. In contrast, the chapters that follow deal with the transport behavior of specific systems, selected to illustrate the concepts developed earlier.
