Abstract

It is now a well-known story that John Scott-Russell on his horse found and chased a solitary wave propagating in the canal near Edinburgh, Scotland. It was some evening in August, 1834. In a sense, the 7th Kyoto Summer Institute on “Dynamical Problems in Soliton Systems” is the 150-year anniversary of the first observation of a soliton.
