Abstract

This chapter deals with the dielectric-constant tensor ε ij (ω,k), as well as the transverse dielectric-constant tensor ε ⊥,ij (ω,k).These tensors are expressed for the region of exciton resonances. This expression is used as the basis for examining the dispersion of the refractive index for normal waves. The procedure for calculating tensor ε ij (ω,k) for molecular crystals is described in detail, in particular, by the local field method. Special features of the shape of the exciton absorption bands in the region of their long-wavelength edge are discussed. An account is given of the theory of Raman scattering of light and x rays with the production of excitons, and bulk and surface polaritons. Also treated is the question of Cherenkov and transition radiation in media displaying spatial dispersion.
