Abstract

This chapter describes the main properties of surface polaritons in isotropic and anisotropic media, along with their excitation and propagation techniques. Surface-polariton dispersion is determined not only by the dielectric permeabilities of the adjacent media, but also reveals some information on the properties of the transition layers (thin films). Recent trends in the spectroscopy of surfaces, interfaces, transition layers and thin films, based on the use of surface polaritons, are discussed.
