Abstract

The dielectric-constant tensor ε ij (ω,k), with spatial dispersion taken into consideration, is applied to crystals. It is shown that the formulation of the tensor ε ij (ω,k) and its use within the framework of macroscopic electrodynamics are possible only under the condition ka ≪ 1, a being the lattice constant. Hence, spatial dispersion is weak in crystal optics, and the function ε ij (ω,k) or ε −1 ij (ω,k) can be replaced by a series expansion in powers of ka. The features of such an expansion are discussed, as well as the form of the tensor ε ij (ω,k) for gyrotropic and nongyrotropic crystals of various classes.
