Due to its hybrid origin, genetic variability in P. hybrida is considerable. The parental species, P. violacea and P. axillaris both (Chap. 2), have variable genomes and their progeny thus inherite heterozygous genetic complexes. Such hybrids possess natural genetic variability and the germ plasm base for the induction of artificial mutants for genetic analysis.
