Abstract

In this paper we describe an apparatus for automatic ultrasonic inspection of thick walled components especially in nuclear power plants. Using longitudinal as well as shear waves at frequencies from 1 to 4 MHz the described system has the following important and newly developed features :

  • high dynamic amplitude range of 100 dB,

  • signal processing of complete A-scans in real-time,

  • application of a new search algorithm for the detection of extreme values of a signal,

  • tracking of all signal maxima originated from defects,

  • transit time measurement of maxima with high resolution (50 ns),

  • programmability of all instrumental and test parameters for each test mode,

  • system design for minimum electromagnetic interference,

  • application of fibre optic lines for data transfer and remote control.

The recorded data is analysed by the ALOK procedure reconstructing the size and location of defects.
