Abstract

It is probably fair to say that what information we have about the magnetic properties of solids has been obtained by studying magnetic ions dissolved in various hosts. This is certainly true of insulators and has been an underlying motivation for the study of dilute alloys. In our discussion of paramagnetism we considered the problem of a magnetic ion dissolved into a nonmagnetic host. We shall now consider what happens when a magnetic impurity is introduced into a magnetic insulating host. This will introduce certain general concepts which bear on our discussion of alloys. Since it is perhaps easier to visualize fixed moments, these concepts may be more readily grasped in this context. We shall then return to the question of magnetic impurities in nonmagnetic metals.
