The Ocean as an Acoustic Medium

Abstract

The ocean is an extremely complicated acoustic medium. The most characteristic feature of the oceanic medium is its inhomogeneous nature. There are two kinds of inhomogeneities, regular and random, and both strongly influence the sound field in the ocean. For example, the regular variation of the sound velocity with depth leads to the formation of the underwater sound channel and, as a consequence, to long-range sound propagation. The random inhomogeneities give rise to scattering of sound waves and, therefore, to fluctuations in the sound field.
