Abstract
The most frequent indication for assessment of the knee joint for compensation purposes is post-traumatic damage to the articular cartilage. Arthroscopy can never be the sole source of information for assessment of the injury since it very seldom provides unequivocal evidence as to the cause of the cartilage injury. A reliable history is essential to thorough assessment of a cartilage injury. The doctor is obliged to analyze carefully the mechanism of the accident which is alleged to have caused the injury; he then has to decide whether the accident could have caused damage to the cartilage of the knee joint.
