Abstract
In the course of the last two hundred years or so the Place de la Concorde and the– buildings that surround it have witnessed a fair number of events, some happy, others tragic.1 But on the evening in question for a particular group of men there was occasion only for joy, enthusiasm and hope; indeed, for orthopaedic surgeons all over the world. The Event was taking place. Twenty-one men, inspired by courage and good will — and heaven knows, they needed it — were combining their resources to create the means to promote orthopaedic surgery and unite those who, the worl over, devote their energies to this branch of surgery.
