Abstract

Before becoming acquainted in Chapters 7 and 8 with the Structure and mode of operation of ultrasonic generators, let us visualize an oscillator in the form of a plate which transmits to the particles of the contiguous material its own longitudinal or transverse motion, viz. over its entire surface with the same phase and amplitude. If such an oscillator is mounted in an extended, rigid wall whence it radiates into a liquid, a sound field is obtained similar to that behind a diaphragm (a hole) of the same diameter as the oscillator in the wall if struck by a plane wave (Fig. 4.1). The particle motion in the diaphragm is then the same as that immediately in front of the oscillator.
