Abstract

Diagnostics is the task of inferring plausible explanations for a set of observations or to decide which explanation accounts for given observations. In many cases the observations are symptoms of diseases of a medical system or faults in a technical system. Symptoms can be considered as hints for certain possible diseases and the theory of hints is therefore an obvious approach to diagnostics. The problem is then to infer the possible faults or diseases causing the observed symptoms.
