Hydrocarbons derived from p-Terphenyl

Abstract

The pyrolysis of benzene yields Biphenyl, terphenyl, 1,2-diphenylbenzene and 1,3-diphenylbenzene. This can be carried out in a glowing iron tube1 or by an electrically heated wire in benzene vapour.2 Terphenyl is also obtained from 1,4-dibromobenzene, bromobenzene and sodium in ether3 or from solid benzenediazonium chloride, fused diphenyl and aluminium chloride.4 The decomposition of benzenediazonium chloride with copper powder also yields terphenyl.5
